James F. Tonkinson IV, ASA, CEA

Appraising machinery and equipment for over 24 years, Jim is currently in private practice providing consultation and appraisals in Machinery & Technical Specialties (MTS) Machinery and Equipment through Tonkinson Appraisals.

Born in Richmond, NY, Jim grew up in Philadelphia, PA but spent several formative years in Puerto Rico, where he learned Spanish. After high school, and a tour of duty in the Air Force, Jim majored in Business Administration at college. In his first position, as a Junior Appraiser for Marshall & Stevens, Inc., he carried out his largest single assignment, a major engagement in Puerto Rico. Subsequent foreign engagements have been in Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Guyana, Dominican Republic, Mexico, numerous European countries and South Africa.

Before establishing his own practice, Jim worked at Deloitte & Touché Valuation Group, MB Valuation Services and The Daley-Hodkin Group of Melville, New York. His experience spans such diverse areas as waste and water treatment facilities, steel operations, metal processing and fabricating, construction and mining equipment, and production machinery and equipment used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, plastic, communication, woodworking and automotive industries.

Mr. Tonkinson joined ASA in 1989 and became an Accredited Senior Appraiser in Machinery and Technical Specialties -– Machinery and Equipment in 1991. A two-term past President of the Long Island Chapter (2003-2005), he has served as a Board Member as well. Jim is also a member of the Association of Machinery & Equipment Appraisers (AMEA).
