November Meeting -- How Attorneys Use Appraisers and Appraisals
The November chapter meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, New York, NY 10003 (212-477-2389).  This will be a joint meeting with the ASA NYC Chapter and features a panel of attorneys from the NY and NJ law firm of Herrick, Feinstein LLP who will address the topic -- How Attorneys Use Appraisers and Appraisals.
The panel comprises Herrick partner John A. Rogers Jr. (Corporate, Securities), associates Andrew M. Grumet (Taxes, Trusts & Estates, Not-for-Profit), Matthew Hawkins (Litigation), and Frank K. Lord, IV (Art Law), and counsel Kenneth E. Kobylowski (Real Estate). They will discuss the use of appraisals in their respective areas of practice. The meeting brochure has additional background information. Appraisers in all disciplines will appreciate this program, which qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit. September Meeting: Personal Property The September chapter meeting will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the Davenport Press Restaurant. The Board Meeting is at 5:30 p.m.: All members are welcome. The Chapter Meeting gets underway with networking at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be NYC Chapter member and past President, Elin Lake Ewald, ASA, who will talk about Appraisals Outside the Box. Ms. Ewald, a Personal Property appraiser accredited in Fine Arts, is President of O'Toole-Ewald Art Associates, Inc., appraisers of fine art, photography, decorative art, ethnographic, and folk art. O'Toole-Ewald specializes in damage, loss, and fraud reports, and Ms. Ewald is a frequent guest speaker on the topic. A graduate of New York University with a Ph.D. in Arts & Humanities, Elin has continued her education with seminars and courses at the Williamstown Art Conservation Center, Sotheby's, Christie's and elsewhere. A popular author and lecturer, she has talked at the Pratt Institute, Fashion Institute of Technology, Chubb Group, Brooklyn Historical Society, and the Organization of Independent Adjusters, among many. Her articles for Ms. Magazine, Fairshare, and the ASA's Personal Property Journal include Obligations of an Agent in the Art Market, My Luncheon with the IRS, and Appraising the Multi-Level Estates of Artists. Ms. Ewald has been an art advisor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the FBI, and the Canadian Government's Tax Revenue department, and helped curate exhibits for the American Museum of Natural History and the Afro-American Museum in Philadelphia. That's because attendance at each regular meeting (the Holiday and Installation Dinners don't count) qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit. But there's more. Members who attend the May meeting can participant in the second round of drawings for a Scholarship to the 2006 ASA International Appraisal Conference in July. Chapter Candidate John Rosini won the first round in April. The Scholarship will be awarded in a run-off between John and the May winner.
USPAP Course.
Northern New Jersey ASA Chapter 73 will offer the 15 hour Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) course on Friday and Saturday, January 13 and 14, 2006 at the Meadowlands Plaza Hotel located at 40 Wood Ave, Secaucus, NJ 07094-2907 (Telephone: 201-422-0200) . It will be conducted by noted ASA instructor, John D. Willey, FASA.
