It's
always great fun to get together during the holidays. Our own Barry
Block, ASA, auctioneer extraordinaire, will be joined
by our favorite auction consultants, Sandy De Quillfeldt and Babette
Cohen, ASA, to step us through a laugh-filled auction in support
of the Chapter's education fund. Please remember to bring something
to sell in the auction - A bottle of wine, a gift basket,
a gift certificate, a piece of jewelry, silver candlesticks, a
vase, decorative holiday items, etc. Be creative! Be generous!
November Meeting -- How Attorneys Use Appraisers and Appraisals
The November chapter meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South, New York, NY 10003 (212-477-2389). 
This will be a joint meeting with the ASA NYC Chapter and features a panel of attorneys from the NY and NJ law firm of Herrick, Feinstein LLP who will address the topic -- How Attorneys Use Appraisers and Appraisals.
The panel comprises Herrick partner John A. Rogers Jr. (Corporate, Securities), associates Andrew M. Grumet (Taxes, Trusts & Estates, Not-for-Profit), Matthew Hawkins (Litigation), and Frank K. Lord, IV (Art Law), and counsel Kenneth E. Kobylowski (Real Estate). They will discuss the use of appraisals in their respective areas of practice. Appraisers in all disciplines will appreciate this program, which qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit. September Meeting: Personal Property
The September chapter meeting will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the Davenport Press Restaurant. The Board Meeting is at 5:30 p.m.: All members are welcome. The Chapter Meeting gets underway with networking at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be NYC Chapter member and past President, Elin Lake Ewald, ASA, who will talk about Appraisals Outside the Box. Ms. Ewald, a Personal Property appraiser accredited in Fine Arts, is President of O'Toole-Ewald Art Associates, Inc., appraisers of fine art, photography, decorative art, ethnographic, and folk art.
O'Toole-Ewald specializes in damage, loss, and fraud reports, and Ms. Ewald is a frequent guest speaker on the topic. 
A graduate of New York University with a Ph.D. in Arts & Humanities, Elin has continued her education with seminars and courses at the Williamstown Art Conservation Center, Sotheby's, Christie's and elsewhere. A popular author and lecturer, she has talked at the Pratt Institute, Fashion Institute of Technology, Chubb Group, Brooklyn Historical Society, and the Organization of Independent Adjusters, among many. Her articles for Ms. Magazine, Fairshare, and the ASA's Personal Property Journal include Obligations of an Agent in the Art Market, My Luncheon with the IRS, and Appraising the Multi-Level Estates of Artists. Ms. Ewald has been an art advisor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the FBI, and the Canadian Government's Tax Revenue department, and helped curate exhibits for the American Museum of Natural History and the Afro-American Museum in Philadelphia. Her presentation is sure to be of interest to appraisers in all disciplines. The program qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit.

ASA International Conference
The 2007 71st annual International Appraisal Conference will be held in Hollywood, CA on July 15-18, 2007. Don't miss this opportunity to meet with appraisers from around the world in Los Angeles' most famous neighborhood, host to the Academy Awards, home to the Walk of Fame, and a popular destination for nightlife and tourism. Enjoy Hollywood while learning from seasoned appraisal professionals. Conference information is maintained on the national ASA website.
June Meeting: Installation Dinner
The June chapter meeting will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. at the Davenport Press Restaurant. Join us for the installation of the 2007-2008 Chapter Officers by past Regional Governor, Paul Roberts, ASA. 
The 2007-2008 Officer candidates are Ellen J. Epstein, ASA, President, John J. Rosini, 1st V.P., Joseph DiCapua, 2nd V.P., Patricia Lanigan, AM, Treasurer, and Joseph Ammiratti, ASA, Secretary. Voting closes June 23. Be sure to vote, then come out on the 28th to welcome incoming Chapter President, Ellen Epstein, and her fellow Officers. April Meeting: All Disciplines -- Business Promotion
The April chapter meeting will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2007 at the Davenport Press Restaurant. The Board Meeting is at 5:00 p.m.: all members are welcome.

Corbett, Jr., President of Corbett Public Relations, Inc., who will talk about Promoting Yourself and Your Business. Mr. Corbett, who took his undergraduate degree at Marist College and his masters at LIU, has taught college-level public relations courses, written articles on the subject, and been a featured speaker at national trade conferences. His firm has achieved newspaper, magazine, trade news, radio and TV coverage for clients including RE/MAX, The National Network of Accountants, Advantage Payroll Services, Advance Commercial Movers, the Long Island Rough Riders, and Shiro of Japan. Mr. Allen, who also sells on uBid.com, Overstock.com and other Internet auction sites, will talk about Online Auctions: How They Work & How to Use Them. Get a behind the scenes look at eBay auctions, and pointers on how to help your clients sell a Hummel or liquidate a business. The program qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit. Attendance is Rewarding!
Chapter President Ken Weinbrecht says "It pays to come to meetings!" That's because attendance at each regular meeting (the Holiday and Installation Dinners don't count) qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit. But there's more. Members who attend the May meeting can participant in the second round of drawings for a Scholarship to the 2006 ASA International Appraisal Conference in July. Chapter Candidate John Rosini won the first round in April. The Scholarship will be awarded in a run-off between John and the May winner.
USPAP Course.
Northern New Jersey ASA Chapter 73 will offer the 15 hour Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) course on Friday and Saturday, January 13 and 14, 2006 at the Meadowlands Plaza Hotel located at 40 Wood Ave, Secaucus, NJ 07094-2907 (Telephone: 201-422-0200) . It will be conducted by noted ASA instructor, John D. Willey, FASA.
